The Concept of Masculinity in the World
Within the world of music and entertainment, it is common to
discuss how the world perceives women. But what about Men? What defines masculinity?
In the dictionary, the term Masculinity means the possession
of the qualities traditionally associated with men such as handsome, muscled,
and driven. The ideal man, according to the world, is meant to be a strong,
emotionally disconnected and tough. This idea dates to the ages of cave men. The
men who were strong and manly enough to bring home food were always preferred where
as the man that was ‘weaker’ died off. That was just natural selection.
But today, is this truly the definition of Masculinity? Artists
such as Olly alexander (Years and Years) Boy George, David Bowie, Jaden Smith
(Son of Famous actors, Will and Jada Smith) and Prince have challenged the
traditional definition of the word.
These men have been famously known for stepping outside of the
box and challenging the traditional definition of masculinity. David Bowie would
be seen wearing glitter or in a dress on occasion. Boy George would wear make-up
and ostentatious clothing. Prince branded himself with the iconic symbol that
was a fusion of the female and male symbol. Jaden Smith has been part of large
brand campaigns where he was photographed wearing skirts as well as releasing
his own gender-neutral clothing line.
Olly Alexander has said
in many interviews that men don’t talk about their feelings and how that can be
toxic. All these things take bravery and confidence in their sense of
masculinity to do.
By doing all these things, these artists are stripping back
the definition of the word ‘Masculinity’ and re- defining it
In my opinion, and no disrespect to those who don’t agree,
but I feel like the definition of masculinity varies on the person. You don’t have
to be incredibly toned and spend a minimum of four hours at the gym a day. You don’t
always have to wear plaid shirts and construction boots to be masculine. I feel
like whatever empowers men, whether that is wearing nail polish and makeup or
wearing plait shirts and boots, is the true definition of masculinity.
