Since starting this blog, I wanted to write this article. This article is one that means a lot to me because it is something that needs to constantly be brought to attention and needs to be discussed many times because it is extremely important.
In the past I have had discussions and seminars with women in a high position within the music industry. One guest inspired me the most. She came in to talk to my class about herself and how she got to where she. Her visit struck something in me. Hearing about her struggles to get to where she is made me think about other women that have or are going through the same thing she went through.
From that lecture, I decided to do a Women in Music masterclass at my university because i felt like everyone, not just my class, needed to hear about the stories of prejudice and struggle these Women went through just because of their sex.
In the past, it was believed that a woman’s role was to be a homemaker or in low positions within the workplace. Unfortunately, it seems that this mentality has followed us into the modern day.
According to studies, only 30% of the British music industry senior positions are occupied by women because women are described as ‘passive’ in the workplace where as men are acknowlegded more for their work. However, if you filter through down to entry level jobs, the occupants are mainly women. The mentality of the ‘glass ceiling’ is still very present today.
This in my opinion is not good enough for 2018. I think that the reason that there are less women in high positions is mostly a mental thing. I, from a very young age, was taught that women are very strong and influential so I always strived to occupy a high position in any field of work. However, not all girls are the same. This is not at all me accusing anyone of saying that they are brought up with the mentality to not break past this mentality, but I think that schools and parents should encourage girls more to take an interest in fields that are considered a ‘man’s place’. Some examples include science, math, business, engineering and others.
The world is changing and I feel like if we encourage and push it, the music industry can be improved in the future.
Please come back next Friday for my next post!
